Running a Work Order from Start to Finish

A work order is the shop-floor job: what to make, how many, and which recipe (BOM) to use. This article walks through the full lifecycle.

Before you start

You'll need an active BOM for the item you want to produce — see Building your first Bill of Materials (coming soon). Only Active BOMs can be selected on a work order.

The lifecycle

Draft → Released → In Progress → Completed → Closed

1. Create the work order

  1. Go to Manufacturing → Work Orders → Create.
  2. Select the finished item, an Active BOM, the quantity to produce, and target dates.
  3. Save as Draft — Biznsbook loads the component list from the BOM automatically.

2. Release it

Click Release. This checks that the BOM actually has components and operations defined, and unlocks material issuing.

3. Issue materials

From the work order's Details page, click Issue Materials — this takes you to a pre-filled material issue. Posting it reduces raw-material stock at the source warehouse.

4. Record production

When output is ready, use Report Production to log good, rejected, rework, and scrap quantities. Completing this entry increases finished-goods stock.

:::tip Prefer fast, real-time capture? If you're producing continuously through a shift, the Shop Floor Terminal lets operators tap Good/Reject/Rework/Scrap in real time from any browser — no separate app needed — and rolls everything into one production entry when the session completes. :::

5. Close it out

Once production is done, Close the work order. This is final — no further changes are possible after closing.

What if something goes wrong mid-run?

  • Need to pause? Use On Hold — record a reason, then Resume when ready.
  • Need to cancel? Cancel is available from most states except Closed, and will reverse any materials already issued.
