Create a Packaging Specification

A packaging specification holds the packaging detail for one item — each item can have only one.

Create a spec

  1. Go to Packaging Specs → Create, or use the link from an item's edit form, which pre-fills the item for you.
  2. Choose the item and its primary packaging material — the material that actually touches the product.
  3. Enter weights and dimensions: net weight, gross weight, volume (ml), and the primary pack's length, width, and height.
  4. Enter identifiers: a 14-digit GTIN-14 for the sellable each, and an optional country-of-origin override.
  5. Set compliance flags: EPR-covered and food-contact.
  6. Save Specification.

If a spec already exists for the item, open it from the list and Edit instead — you can't create a second one.

Setting the basics from the item form

For a lighter touch, open the item under Inventory → Items → Edit and expand the Packaging Specification accordion. With Packaging Management licensed, you can set the primary packaging material directly here, and see the item's packaging cost and weight once a BOM exists — see Add and manage products for the rest of the item form. For the full hierarchy (case and pallet levels) or a GTIN, use the full Packaging Specification screen instead.
