Open and Close a Cashier Session

Every shift on the terminal happens inside a cashier session — you can't ring up a sale without one open, and only one session can be open per user at a time.

Open a session

  1. Go to POS Terminal. If nothing's open, you'll be prompted to open a session.
  2. Select your POS terminal register — this is required, and it's what drives fiscal receipts and terminal Z-report totals for your shift.
  3. Enter the opening float — the cash starting in the drawer — and confirm.

Mid-shift: X-report

Open the X-Report from the terminal header any time to see the same totals a Z-report would show, without closing the session — useful for a spot check partway through a shift.

Close a session

  1. Use Close session from the terminal (F12).
  2. Review the cash reconciliation: opening float + cash sales − cash refunds = expected cash.
  3. Enter the counted closing cash and any notes.
  4. Review the variance — over or short. Whether a variance is just a warning or actually posts to the ledger depends on your company's settings.
  5. View the session Z-report for the shift summary.

:::info Session Z vs. terminal Z A session Z-report covers one cashier's shift. A terminal Z-report (under Payments → Z-reports) covers a register for a full day, including every cashier and any back-office checkout sales on that register — see Read Z-reports and X-reports. :::
