Handle Catch-Weight Items
Catch weight is for items you receive by the case or unit but buy and stock by weight — fish, meat, and fresh produce, where no two boxes weigh quite the same. Instead of assuming every case is identical, you capture the actual weight received, and stock and cost stay honest.
Mark an item as catch weight
- Open the item under Products → Items → Edit and expand Catch Weight.
- Turn on This is a catch weight item.
- Set the expected weight per unit (for example
4.5kg for a salmon side), the weight unit, and a variance tolerance % — how far from expected is acceptable. - Save. Its stock is now tracked in weight units, not pieces or cases.
This is entirely opt-in — items you never mark this way are unaffected.
Record weight on a GRN
- Add the item to a GRN line as usual, by case or unit. Extra fields appear: actual weight, an auto-calculated weight per unit, the expected weight, and a variance % badge — green within tolerance, highlighted outside it.
- Enter the total actual weight received for the line. Biznsbook divides it by the ordered quantity to show weight per unit and the variance.
- On an existing GRN, Save weight directly on the line. On a new one, the captured weight is stored when you post.
- On posting, on-hand stock corrects to the actual weight received instead of the ordered case count, so valuation and depletion stay accurate. Ordinary lines post exactly as before.
Recording a weight needs Manage purchasing and invoice scan.
Catch Weight Items and Weight Variance
Catch Weight Items (needs View) lists every item with its expected weight, unit, and tolerance. Weight Variance (needs View restaurant reports) reviews every catch-weight line received in a GRN date range — highlighting rows outside tolerance.
